Unlike 2D signs where the imagery is at the same level as the surface of the wood, 3D or dimensional signs have letters and/or images that are either carved into the wood (known as bas-relief) or are raised above the surface.

Customization Options

The textural carving of a 3D sign and the shadows it creates is more lifelike, making more of an impact than a 2D sign. Think of the difference between a photograph of a tree and seeing one in real life, especially when you apply the right lighting to bring out your sign’s features.

Plus, 3 dimensional wood signs really stand out from typical flat images that are everywhere. They grab more attention and are memorable, particularly in situations where you want a western, woodsy, rustic, or nautical flavor.

3D signs can be carved in any of the woods we use, and you may also specify size, shapes, logos, lettering or graphics just like all our signs. There are also special finishes we can add to enhance your 3D sign, used alone or in combination:

  • Painting to enhance the 3D qualities

  • Sandblasting to add texture and character

  • Scorched for a burnt look

  • Stained

  • Or simply leave your sign unfinished to let nature run its course for a weathered look over time

HDU for Signs that Need to be Extra Durable

Beyond wood signs, we work with the more robust and dense HDU as a versatile substrate for very detailed designs and treatments. It’s waterproof and will hold up against environmental damage. It’s made of high-density urethane which forms a rigid, closed-cell base, superior to other foam materials.

How We Turn Your Idea into a 3 Dimensional Sign

It all starts with your idea, rough sketch, photo, or other materials that explain what you have in mind. Here’s an example of the process:

Original customer image provided for wood sign design

A customer sent us this image to turn into a 3D wood sign. Once we took a look, we provided an initial estimate.

Upon approval of the estimate, we then asked for a deposit based on the amount of work we needed to do to turn the image into a 3D model.

Once the 3D model was approved, we positioned the text for a mockup (without color).  With approval and full payment, we then scheduled the final carving and painting of the sign.

The Final Product

It took roughly 20 days to complete the sign. This is a typical turnaround, but we provide a more accurate timeline depending on the complexity of the design and what we have going on in the shop.
